I’ve taken the classic southern boiled peanuts and turned it up a notch. That’s right. Nashville Hot boiled peanuts! And let me tell ya, if you love boiled peanuts (I know, not everyone does, it’s a southern thing!), but if you do, Nashville Hot just takes it to another level!
And…and…I forgot to tell you the best part: It’s made in the Instant Pot or whatever brand of electric pressure cooker you have!
If you’ve never had boiled peanuts, you’re in for a real treat. It’s quite a polarizing food, though, even here in the south. You either love’ em or you hate ’em. But you can grow to love them if you’ve previously hated them, as I have witnessed with my wife. She will devour these.
The peanuts are quite soft, some would say mushy even. The shells, when you bite into them, are filled with spicy, juicy goodness! Some people eat the shells as well. There is no right or wrong way y’all.
Now, I’m not gonna lie, it will possibly still take a while from start to finish, depending on how you like them, but the actual cook time is a fraction of what it is using any other method. That means you can make multiple batches with different flavors!
That’s the beauty of this here recipe folks – I’m using Nashville Hot Dill seasoning, but you can use ANY seasoning you want using the same measurements and technique. You want cajun? Add some Tony’s or Slap Ya Momma. You want BBQ? Add some John Henry’s Pecan or your favorite BBQ seasoning. Not in the mood for BBQ? Try jerk instead! You want curry? You got it. Add your favorite curry powder or curry paste to the pot.
And well, if you want to take it easy and just have boiled peanuts, stick with straight salt with no seasonings. Your choice, but you’re missing out if you’re not hitting it with the Nashville Hot baby.
The key to this recipe, obviously, is the Nashville Hot but not just that. It’s green peanuts. Green peanuts. At this time of year, I can find them just about anywhere, including Wal-Mart. You don’t want those roasted nuts in the shell. That just ain’t southern.
So let’s get some Nashville Hot boiled peanuts going. And if you’ve never had boiled peanuts, go ahead and give them a whirl, just to say you did.
Nashville Hot Boiled Peanuts
Southern style boiled peanuts in your Instant Pot!
- 2 pounds green peanuts
- ⅓ cup sea or kosher salt
- 3 tablespoons Nashville Hot seasoning
First, and this is very important: Rinse your green peanuts very well. Rinse, rinse and rinse some more. When you think you're done, rinse again. Peanuts are dirty and you don't to be eating grit.
Place the green peanuts in your Instant Pot. Add the salt and Nashville Hot seasoning. Add water to the 3quart line or 1/2 full line on your Instant Pot. If you don't have an Instant Pot and don't have those lines, add about 10 cups of water to your pot.
Swish your seasonings about a little. Place a trivet or two on top, just to keep as many submerged as you can. It won't be perfect and that's okay.
Add the lid and pressure on high for 65 minutes. Let the pressure completely come down naturally. That means just leave it be. You can unplug the machine if you want to.
When the pressure is completely released, go ahead and give it a taste. Now, they are done right here, right now. If you like the feel and juiciness of the peanuts, dig in.
You'll notice that at this point, when they're first done, they are floating still. If you like your peanut shells filled with juicy goodness, let them hang out in the pot for a while. You'll notice after a couple of hours they'll start sinking to the bottom – the shells are filled with juice now.
I personally like to let my peanuts hang around over night in the fridge. They become juicier and softer as they sit and that's just the way I like it, but you do you.
You can find Nashville Hot seasoning any and everywhere. Tone’s makes one and I see that at Wal-Mart. I use Nashville Hot Dill and that has a dill pickle flavor to it, which is really tasty, but use what you can find as long as it says Nashville Hot.
As I mentioned up at the top of this recipe, it can possibly take a long time. 24 hours if you’re like me and prefer a juicier peanut.
If you find they are too soft for your liking the first time around, reduce the time a little bit until you find your sweet spot. 65 minutes is my sweet spot. I have a friend who likes it cooked even longer because he likes to just eat the whole thing, so he likes softer fibers in the shell. It’s all about you and how you like it. You cannot mess this up.
